Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL reconstruction) is a surgical tissue graft replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament, located in the knee, to restore its function after anterior cruciate ligament injury. All Island Orthopaedics physicians are specialized in treating such conditions. How is ACL reconstruction performed? The torn ligament is removed from the knee before the graft is inserted. The surgery is performed arthroscopically. There are three types of grafts. Autografts, where we employ bone or tissue harvested from the patient's body, and Allografts, where we use bone or tissue from a donor's body. Synthetic tissue suitable to ACL reconstruction has also been developed, but little data exists on its strength or reliability.
